Im Folgenden wird die Ökozone der mediterranen Subtropen genauer untersucht.

Die mediterranen Subtropen nehmen lediglich einen Anteil von 1,7 Prozent der Festlandsfläche der Erde ein. Damit sind sie von allen Ökozonen die kleinste. Auf den ersten Blick scheinen die mediterranen Subtropen im Vergleich zu anderen Ökozonen relativ wahllos verteilt. Auf der Erde gibt es fünf recht kleine, voneinander isolierte Vorkommensbereiche.

Die mediterranen Subtropen beschränken sich meist auf küstennahe Streifen auf den Westseiten der Kontinente. Diese Gebiete liegen auf der Nordhalbkugel zwischen dem 30. und forty five. Breitenkreis, auf der Südhalbkugel – wegen der geringeren Landmasse – nur zwischen dem 30. und 38. Breitenkreis.
